Eliminating Mould – the other ‘F-word’

After so much wet weather on the Central Coast lately, not too many homes and businesses are immune, so it becomes a case of “you get mould, and you get mould, everybody gets mould!!”

NSW Health in this article describes mould as an organism called Fungi which includes mushrooms and yeast.
It not only grows in plain sight but also where you can’t see it like within your carpet and fabric fibres in your furniture like bedheads, lounges and even in your curtains. The bugger can cling to anything and thrives in moist/damp and or humid areas.
Then there’s airborne mould spores. We can breathe in these mould spores causing all sorts of health problems from runny nose to asthma attack so it’s vital to get it treated as soon as you know it’s present.
The NSW Health department also recommends getting a professional carpet clean saying “Absorbent materials, such as carpet may need to be professionally cleaned or replaced if they are contaminated with mould.”

Mould removal myths
Mould removing products from the shop and bleach only cover up the appearance of mould. It just turns it from green or black to white! I know right, a travesty! NSW Health also recommends a variety of measures to remove the mould and always wear protective clothing when cleaning mould and have good ventilation. Full cleaning checklist can be found here but good old vinegar (4 parts) and 1 part water is the best for surfaces. But what about your lounges, bedheads, rugs and flooring? It’s recommended to get it professionally cleaned.

- Use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter
- Increase air circulation around furniture by moving the furniture away from the walls
- Get your air conditioner serviced regularly
- Reduce condensation by using exhaust fans, or open windows in the bathroom and kitchen when showering, cooking or using the dishwasher
- Wipe up excess water caused by condensation such as on single glazed windows and on shower glazing
- Book a professional carpet or upholstery clean or a pressure clean.
